How to get an ISAN

Getting an ISAN is a simple procedure, you simply need to complete the following steps:

  1. Find a Registration Agency
    Locate the ISAN Registration Agency (RA) serving your region.
  2. Register yourself
    Register with this Registration Agency, either using online form, or regular mail/fax form.
  3. Get approved
    Your application as Registrant must first be approved by the Registration Agency. Registrants must be linked to the audiovisual industry.
  4. Use the ISAN system
    The Registration Agency will come back to you with information on how to use the ISAN system to create new ISANs.

  2. AD Commercials / Advertising clips / Trailers
  3. TF Television films
  4. DO Documentary films
  5. ED Educational programs/films
  6. SE Dramatic serials, comedies, "soap operas"
  7. SH Short films
  8. MM Multimedia (eg multimedia computer games)
  9. NE News
  10. LV Live events
  11. PF Performances
  12. SP Sporting events and programs
  13. TE Other television broadcasts
  14. VC Music videos
What can't have an ISAN:
  1. Audio recordings
  2. Film soundtracks
  3. Cue sheets
  4. Screenplays
  5. Storyboards
  6. Individual frames of an audiovisual work
  7. Photos
  8. Deleted scenes
  9. Other audiovisual elements not associated with an audiovisual work
